The 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational had plenty of ups and downs for many golfers. Tons of first-place leads quickly dissipated each day, but a handful held on.
Some golfers could not keep their frustrations at bay as Matt Jones heaved his putter into the water on the 11th hole on the third day of play. Below you can see how Scottie Scheffler held onto the win at the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Who is Scottie Scheffler?
Scheffler, currently the sixth-best golfer in the world, has been on a roll this golfing season. His first PGA Tour win came back in February of this year when he won a playoff against Patrick Cantlay.
Now, Scheffler has recorded another victory against a loaded field and on one of the hardest courses that is not part of the Majors. His latest performance will likely bump him up a spot in the rankings and allow him much-deserved FedEx Cup points.
Scheffler was able to take home $2.16 million for his recent victory. By his last victory and this one, he has combined for roughly over $4 million just this year alone.
Top Players in the Field Performances
Billy Horschel finished the event off tied at second with a four under. On the final hole, he had a chance to catch Scheffler but failed to sink a 30-foot birdie putt. Still, Horschel was able to claim $908,000 for his tough four days of play.
Viktor Hovland tied for second as well and was playing alongside Scheffler. His shortcomings came on the 17th hole when he had to two putt from roughly 50 feet.
Then, he had to nail a birdie putt on the 18th to tie Scheffler but missed the 18-footer. He, too, was able to take home $908,000.
Tyrell Hatton also tied for second and took home the same amount of prize money. At one point, he had established a solid score to potentially contend for a playoff and finished an hour before the others. He had the hot hand early and won this event two years ago but just did not have enough to finish the job.
Gary Woodland had a real chance of winning for the first time since his 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. On the last day, he briefly had a lead and even made a beautiful shot that led to an eagle on the 16th. However, the next two holes got him, and he dropped back down for a fifth-place tie and a score of three under.
Surprising Results
Rory Mcllroy will hopefully bounce back after having such a terrible final round at Bay Hill. While in contention after the first three rounds, he shot four over on the last day to finish one over total and tied for 13th.
Early in the event, Mcllroy led the field as high as seven under. To fall that harsh on the final day is not fun, but now his focus is on the next tournament.
