The Players Championship usually showcases some interesting matchups. It does not matter who you are; whether you are top-ranked or not even considered to win, it can be done by anyone.

The Players Stadium Course is full of hazards and traps, which needs a very technical golfer at tee time to claim a victory. Below you can see which underdogs might surprise the field.

Top Betting Underdogs at Play

Even though this event’s field has nearly every top 50 ranked golfer, this is still open to anyone that can perform at this tough course. This is a perfect opportunity for someone that is overlooked to win this against some of the projected better players in the field.

Below are just outside the top 10 in odds to win. The following has been provided by DraftKings:

  • Adam Scott +3000
  • Cameron Smith +3300
  • Billy Horschel +4000
  • Brooks Koepka +4000
  • Sung-jae Im +4000
  • Jordan Spieth +4000
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick +4000
  • Sam Burns +4000
  • Shane Lowry +4000
  • Will Zalatoris +4000

Sam Burns has had a fairly unique year but in a bad way. He has missed three consecutive cuts, but on Bermuda grass, he deserves some thought. He has not relatively played great here in the past but has some solid numbers to hopefully put him on the right track.

Adam Scott has played a total of 65 rounds and has a victory, but this was all the way back in 2004. If he can turn back time, this would be a good opportunity to do so. He ranks sixth among players in the field with strokes gained per round.

Sung-jae Im has been somewhat consistent during last year and some of this year. He looked solid last year at this event, posting a T17 score with two of those rounds having a 66.

Those pair of 66’s could be exactly what he needs to win, especially if he has finally figured this place out. He also has four top 10 finishes in his last ten starts, so he has some quality momentum for this event.

It never hurts to throw a bone at someone like Brooks Koepka. With four major championships and previously being the number one overall a few years back, he has to be thinking of getting back on top.

Most Likely Underdog to Succeed

Matthew Fitzpatrick put some quality numbers against the field recently at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. As challenging as that course is, in addition to a loaded field of top players, he has some great momentum coming in.

Looking back at this event last year, he finished tied at ninth along with the current number one golfer in the world Jon Rahm. He also ranks second in total strokes gained, which also happens to be better than Rahm. For a player that is solid across the board and has done well in this event before, he could be a steal.
