There are a number of factors that make betting on the Bermuda Championship this weekend quite a thriller. First off, this is only the fourth time this event has ever been played, so there’s not a ton of course history at Port Royal Golf Course to handicap off of.
Aside from the course itself, the location in Southampton Parish in Bermuda is right on the ocean. Scattered thunderstorms look like the norm this week, and there looks like at least a 15 MPH forecast for all four days of the tournament.
When you’ve got a fairly new event played in unpredictable weather conditions and with a field that is highly diluted after last weekend’s star-studded CJ Cup, then this really looks like anybody’s tournament to take.
Denny McCarthy is the +1400 favorite, but this might be a time to just have a lot of lower-priced tickets at longer odds players. We should be in for an exciting tournament!
About the Butterfield Bermuda Championship
The Bermuda Championship debuted in the fall of 2019 as an alternative to the WGC-HSBC Champions with an opening prize pool of $3 million.
When the WGC-HSBC Champions was canceled in 2020 and 2021, the Bermuda Championship became a FedEx Cup point event.
Port Royal Golf Course Information
Port Royal GC in Southampton, Bermuda, is an incredible short course at 6,800 yards, but the windy weather conditions make it so that longer drivers don’t have an added advantage.
Since this is a short course and the wind makes everybody play basically the same approach from tee to green, through three past events, it’s been solid putters who have had the most success here.
Two of the top three players in shots gained putting in 2022 have won this event in the past and at very long odds. Lucas Herbert led the TOUR in SG: Putting last year and was the 2021 Bermuda Championship winner.
Brendon Todd was the inaugural winner of this event in 2019, and he ranked third in SG: Putting in 2021. In between Herbert and Todd in SG:Putting was McCarthy, and he’s the favorite to win in 2022.
Bermuda Championship Field
With so many of the world’s top golfers playing at the CJ Cup last weekend, we’ve got quite an interesting choice of picks for the Bermuda Championship. McCarthy is the favorite, and he’s never won on TOUR, nor has Thomas Detry (+2200) or Seamus Power (+2200), the other top three in this field.
Herbert won this event last year for his first career TOUR victory, sealing up an automatic bid to the Masters in the process. Herbert was 60/1 on the odds, and he’s actually the lowest-priced player to ever win this event. Todd won it at 80/1, and Brian Gay took home the 2020 crown at 200/1.
This is a draw-a-name-out-of-a-hat type event, so don’t feel bad taking some longshot golfers. Great putters have had success here in the past, so tickets should be centered around them.
