Jordan Spieth’s 3 Biggest Events of 2023

Media by Associated Press: Jordan Spieth, of the the United States, consults his notebook during the second round of the Hero World Challenge PGA Tour at the Albany Golf Club, in New Providence, Bahamas, Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

Jordan Spieth continues to be one of the most recognizable golfers in the game, and his popularity has only increased by competing in “The Match” where he and Justin Thomas outlasted Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

2022 was a solid year for Spieth, as he got back into the winner’s circle with a victory at the RBC Heritage in April and runner-ups at the AT&T Byron Nelson and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Spieth will be turning 30 in 2023, an important milestone for the 13X PGA Tour winner as we will see if he enters into his prime or starts to fade away and get passed by a younger generation of golfers. Here are the three biggest events for Jordan Spieth in 2023:

The Masters

The Masters is consistently the biggest event of the year for any golfer, as a win here can be life-changing. Spieth has already collected one green jacket by getting a win in 2015 at Augusta, but you really start to enter rarified air when you become a multiple Masters victor. Bubba Watson was the last golfer to collect his second green jacket, winning in 2012 and 2014.

The reason 2023 at Augusta is also important for Spieth is that he had a horrible showing there last season, missing the cut with a 74-76. That was a far cry from his third-place finish in 2020, and that now marks a T21, a T46, and third, and a MC in Spieth’s last four visits to Magnolia Lane.

PGA Championship

While people will be focused on whether Rory McIlroy can complete the “Rory Slam” by picking up his first Masters win and thus collecting all four majors, we could also see a “Spieth Slam” at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester near the end of May.

Aside from his 2015 Masters win, Spieth also won the U.S. Open in 2015 and the Open Championship in 2017. He has a runner-up at the PGA Championship in that magical 2015 run but has never won the event – the last major he needs for the sweep. Spieth has finished 30th or worse in his last three PGA Championship entries, so he really hasn’t been close recently.

TOUR Championship

While anybody can get hot over a weekend and win any given tournament, you know you’re the best golfer of the year if you can succeed in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Spieth does have one FedEx Cup championship in 2015, but only Tiger Woods (2) and Rory McIlroy (3) are multiple-time winners.

Spieth is a very competitive golfer – sometimes to his own detriment – so you know he’s not happy being one of these once-a-year winners. Maybe turning 30 in July will help Spieth turn into the wise old sage and help him recapture that magic from 2015. Either way, 2023 just feels like a turning point season for Spieth. Whether that’s for better or worse we will soon find out.
