Puerto Rico Open Betting Underdogs

Media by Associated Press: Golf fans walk to the 18th hole during the final round of the Puerto Rico Open PGA golf tournament in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019.

The Puerto Rico Open allows golfers to get a lot of FedEx Cup points and has an easier field than most PGA Tour events. This event does not hold many of the Top 50 players ranked in the FedEx Cup, so it is a great event for the 70-100th-ranked players to collect their points and move up in the rankings.

This week will show us the players that want to get into the top 50, and this tournament will go down to the wire during Sunday’s final round.

Look for Bill Haas to Make a Move

Haas turned pro in 2004 and has six career wins on the PGA Tour. Haas is an underdog for sure coming into the Puerto Rico Open with odds of +12500. Haas has played in six events this year, not making four cuts and withdrawing from one. The only cut he made was in his most recent tournament, The Honda Classic.

Haas tied for 71st place as he carded +3 through the four days. Haas is currently in 219th place in the FedEx Cup standings with only three points. The 300 FedEx points would be huge for Haas this week. I believe that Haas could get a top-25 finish this week, and he should be a guy to watch out for this week.

Brent Grant is Another Long Shot to Look for

Grant turned pro in 2017 and is pretty new to the PGA Tour. Grant is a major underdog coming into this week, with his odds being set at +8000. Grant has played in 12 PGA Tour events this year, missing the cut seven times and one withdrawal. Grant has cut into four of the 12 events, and on top of the four cuts being made, he was able to get two top-25 finishes.

The last tournament Grant played in was the Honda Classic, where he withdrew on the first day after he carded a 77. The FedEx points for Grant are needed as he is ranked 138th with only 92 points.

Of these three underdog picks, I believe that Grant has the best chance of winning this tournament.

Andry Landry is Another Underdog Who Could Win

Landry was able to turn pro in 2009 and has been able to get two PGA Tour wins in his career. Landry has odds of +10000 coming into this week. These odds are a little surprising to me because I believe that Landry could make a big run this week.

Landry has played in nine PGA Tour events this year and has been cut four times and withdrawn once.

So, Landry has made four cuts this year but has not gotten a top-25 finish this year. The Honda Classic was the last tournament that Landry played in, and he was cut before the weekend started as he carded a +6 through his first two days.

Landry looks to bounce back this week and get into the weekend. If Landry can get into the weekend, I believe that he could get a top-25 finish this week.
