Wyndham 2022 Betting Underdogs

In the past month we’ve had J.T. Poston winning the John Deere Classic at 40/1, Chez Reavie taking home the Barracuda Championship at 50/1, and Scott Piercy almost closing out the 3M Open at 125/1. So it’s been a good run overall for underdogs.

The big names have stepped up recently though. Xander Schauffele won the Scottish Open at 18/1, Cam Smith won the Open Championship at 25/1, and Tony Finau has captured back to back events as one of the top 1-2 betting favorites in each.

The Wyndham Championship has a good field, but not a great one as many big name players are resting up for the three-week grind that is the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Let’s see if we can find some Wyndham betting underdogs that could be in play this weekend.

Russell Henley +2500

He’s not an insanely wild underdog, but Henley has to be considered this weekend just because he is second on the Tour in shots gained – approach. Sedgefield CC has ranked as the easiest SG:APP course for the last seven years, a big reason why Henley finished in the top 10 here in 2016, 2017, and 2020.

Kevin Kisner +4000

Kisner is the defending champion, winning a huge six golfer playoff in just two holes. Kisner finished sixth at the Travelers and then had a top 25 at the Open Championship, but he couldn’t build on that after missing the cut last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Kisner is a top 25 driving accuracy player on the Tour, a metric that Sedgefield CC rewards as a short, positional course. Doc Redman had an 87.5% accuracy in 2020 and finished third while Adam Hadwin led in driving accuracy last year and finished in the top 10.

Aaron Wise +4000

Aside from Will Zalatoris, Henley, and Shane Lowry the next best player in the field on SG:Approach is Aaron Wise down at #24. That gives Wise some underrated value as the fourth best player in the most important stat at this golf course.

Wise has finished in the top 30 in five of his last eight tournaments played, so on a course that caters to his strength he may be right there heading into the final round.

Brendon Toddl +10000

Week in and week you look at Todd’s stats and he seems like he’ll be in contention – only to continually disappoint. This is a guy who ranks eighth in driving accuracy, seventh in scrambling, and second in shots gained: putting yet he only has two top 10 finishes in 23 events played this year.

Todd still has value at 100/1 this weekend as he finished in the top 10 here last season after missing five of the previous six cuts at Sedgefield CC. Todd was the second most accurate driver and hit the fourth most greens in regulation so maybe he has finally figured this course out and is ready for his fourth career victory.
