BMW PGA Championship 2022 Picks

Best Underdog Pick

Robert MacIntyre

Finally, to complete my portfolio is 26-year-old Scotsman Bob Mac. 2022 has been a very poor season by his standards with only one top ten finish all the way back in February and it has seen him drop to 110 in the world rankings. However, there were some encouraging signs in Denmark last week. Bob gained a total of 10.5 strokes T2G over the four rounds on his way to a tied 12th finish. His long game is clearly in good shape ahead of Wentworth. If Bob can just have a decent week with his putter then I’d expect him to be contending come Sunday. There is a definite upside with Bob when he reaches big prices like he is this week as I’d expect him to be half this price if coming into this tournament with better recent form. Therefore, in my opinion I think he is worth an each-way bet with the hope he finds some heat with the putter.

Odds 70/1 +7000

Best Favorite Pick

Matt Fitzpatrick

The stand out bet for me this week and the first name in my portfolio is world number 11 Matt Fitzpatrick. This has been by far his best year on tour since he turned pro, winning the US Open in fantastic fashion, along with nine other top tens this year. Matt is a different player now than to what we’ve been accustomed to seeing in recent years, he’s mixing it with the best players in the world, competing week in, week out. This is clearly a drop in grade from the PGA Tour and Fitzy’s recent DPWT form is impressive, 6th in the Scottish Open, 2nd in Dubai and 1st in the Andalucia Masters. He clearly knows he can post a good finish when coming back over to play on the DPWT. Now we all know how good he is with his flatstick, he loves playing on bentgrass greens which further backs up the case for putting him up this week. Rory is the clear deserved favourite at 6/1 but at double his price, I would rather be on Fitzy as, for me, he ticks every box this week.

Odds 12/1 +1200

Best Top 20 Pick

Viktor Hovland

Viktor hasn’t reached the heights he would have set himself in 2022. There have been glimpses of his talent when finishing 4th at The Open Championship, but those high finishes have been lacking. This course will suit his style off play. The course rewards elite level driving which is Viktors strength. The course also demands players to move the ball both way with iron in hand, something that comes naturally to Viktor. I expect him to make e push for the title this week but a top 20 is well within reach at fair odds.

Odds 12/1 +1200

Tyrrell Hatton

Next up for me is a player I can’t believe hasn’t won this year yet. Tyrrell Hatton has played decent golf for most of the year. Narrowly missing out on victories in the Arnold Palmer, in Abu Dhabi and finishing top five in Dubai. A winner of this event back in 2020 when he won by four strokes over Victor Perez, he’s also posted a further top ten finish here alongside his victory. Hatton’s recent form is strong too, with four top 25 finishes since his missed cut at the Irish Open. All areas of his game have looked good over the last five events with him constantly gaining strokes on putting and on approach. I believe this is a good chance for Tyrrell to land his first win of 2022 and the 30/1 quotes are very fair in a weaker field than those he’s been competing in over on the PGA Tour.

Odds 30/1 +3000

Dean Burmester

Third on the list is big-hitting South African Dean Burmester. He’s just coming off a tied 5th at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship where he shot a -7 65 in the final round to earn his first ever PGA Tour card for the 2022/2023 season. He’s riding a crest of a wave right now and I can see him taking that momentum to Wentworth this week. A course where he has finished 9th and 12th in the past. Currently ranked 66th in the world rankings, Burmester has been in good form for a few months now. 10th in the Scottish Open, a very impressive 11th in The Open, and two top 5 finishes in the Korn Ferry Tour. His game is clearly trending in the right direction and I can see him having a good week before he starts his first proper PGA Tour campaign next week at the Fortinet Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy started 2022 poorly, however, his form has improved week on week over the summer months. Now rested, fully recovered and back in the comforts of the UK, Tommy will have his eyes on the prize. A lack of competitive golf is the only reason he didn’t make the headline portfolio as this course is one that suits him. His game off the tee is tailor made especially his natural draw which is favorable on the par 5 finishing holes. A controlled driver should allow his world class iron game to flourish. I cant see Tommy outside of the top 20 come the close of play this week.

BMW PGA Championship 2022 Overview

The 68th edition of the BMW PGA Championship will get underway on Thursday and Wentworth once again plays host. The flagship event on the DP World Tour usually assembles a good field and it’s no different this year. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, defending champion Billy Horschel and many more are set to appear at Wentworth in what’s set to be a fascinating renewal. There are also plenty of the LIV rebels entered into the field, Rory and Billy Horschel have already made their displeasure known regarding this. A 7,267 yard par 72 with bentgrass greens located in Virginia Water, Surrey awaits the players this week.

The last four winners of this event are Billy Horschel (2021), Tyrell Hatton (2020), Danny Willett (2019) and Francesco Molinari (2018). A solid long game is usually essential round Wentworth. The last four winners above have ranked 1-1-13-2 SG: Tee to Green. Strong and accurate drivers are also preferred this week, the last four winners all ranked inside the top 20 for SG: Off The Tee. Course form round here also seems to be quite important as six of the last seven winners had posted a top eight finish prior to winning. However, recent form not as much, interestingly, three of the past four winners had missed the cut on their last start before teeing it up at the BMW PGA Championship. Players can pop up and win unexpectedly here, something to watch out for.

Key Skill Sets Required

    1. SG Off The Tee – This is a demanding driving track. Players who consistently gain strokes off the tee over the course of the week will be set well. The ability to move the ball both ways off the tee will be advantageous when trying to attack these tucked pins on super undulating greens.
    2. GIR Gained – Players who dominate the GIR gained stats throughout the week have an outstanding chance. Patient iron play to the correct quartets of the greens will set up the opportunity to go low.
    3. SG Approach Play – Moving the ball both ways with iron in hand is a must-have skill here at Wentworth. Look for high-quality ball strikers to flourish this week.
    4. PAR 5 Scoring – Players must dominate the Par 5 holes on offer each day, expect the winner to play the par 5 holes in 10 under par over the course of the week. The course is set up for drama with the final 2 holes both being par 5’s.
