Brooks Koepka Mayakoba Golf Classic 2020

This week, the PGA TOUR heads to Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN. A field of 132 players will tee it up at the par-71 El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Brendan Todd won last year’s event with a score of a 20-under-par 284, one shot ahead of a trio of players. That group included Carlos Ortiz, who was bidding to become the first player from Mexico to win the tournament.

The 14th edition of the Mayakoba boasts a strong field, headlined by major winners Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. The familiar names of Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, and Daniel Berger will also be on hand at Playa del Carmen.

The highest winning score in this event was John Huh’s 13-under 271 in 2012. Since then, the champion has averaged almost 20-under, with Matt Kuchar setting the tournament record of 22-under par in 2019.

“Koepka missed the U.S. Open and is still rounding into form. His odds to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic stand at +1000.”

Betting Odds

As expected, Thomas, the third-ranked player in the world, is the favorite with odds of +500. Thomas is playing in his first tournament since the Masters, where he finished in fourth place.

It was his third top 10 in four starts in the 2020-21 season, including a tie for eighth at the U.S. Open.

The 13-time Tour winner’s worst performance was a tie for 12th at the Zozo Championship in October, and he is currently 10th in the FedEx Cup standings. Thomas last appeared at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2015 when he tied for 23rd place at nine-under par.

Koepka, ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Rankings, is also playing for the first time since a top 10 Masters finish. Since returning from a knee injury, the four-time major winner recorded another top 10 result at the Vivint Houston Open.

Koepka missed the U.S. Open and is still rounding into form. His odds to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic stand at +1000.

The former two-time U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner is looking for his fourth non-major Tour title. In 2014, Koepka missed the cut in his only Mayakoba appearance.

The third betting favorite at +1600 is 2014 Mayakoba Classic winner Harris English, making his sixth appearance of the 2020-21 season. He has three top 10 finishes, the highest a fourth place at the U.S. Open. His other previous win was at the 2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Abraham Ancer has odds of +1800 to become the first Mexican player to win this event. He’s joined at those odds by Berger and Finau. Ancer contended at the Masters before struggling with a final-round 76 on his way to a tie for 13th.

Tournament Preview

Whoever wins the Mayakoba will have to go low, and all of the players at the top of the odds list can do that. Thomas, with all of his wins and a major title, is the clear favorite and can make birdies in bunches. If Koepka continues to round into form, he’s also capable of posting a low number.

Ancer, while a sentimental favorite, has just one top 10 in his five 2020-21 starts and will need to take his game up a notch to contend against a strong field.
