Betting Underdogs to Watch in 2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic

The final official PGA TOUR event of the calendar year in the wraparound 2020-21 season is the Mayakoba Classic at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Because the schedule changes necessitated by COVID-19, the late fall tournament has one of the strongest fields in its 14-year history.

The winning score the last five years has averaged almost 20-under par, so it’s important for the winner to be able to make birdies in bunches. Matt Kuchar set the tournament scoring record of 22-under par in his 2019 victory.

Betting Favorites

The favorites in the futures betting odds are Justin Thomas, number three in the Official World Golf Rankings, and four-time major champion Brooks Koepka. Both finished in the top 10 at the Masters, the most recent tournament for the pair.

Thomas, whose last appearance at the Mayakoba resulted in a tie for 23rd in 2015, is at +500. Following him at +1000 is Koepka, who missed the cut the last time he played at El Camaleon in 2014.

Next in the odds listing is Harris English at +1600, with Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger and Tony Finau next at +1800.

Dark Horse Possibilities

Even favorites as strong as Thomas have a difficult time winning a tournament on the PGA TOUR. With a very competitive field of 132 of the best golfers in the world, there are plenty of other great candidates to come away with a win in the Mayakoba.

Viktor Hovland, the 23-year-old Norwegian out of Oklahoma State, already has a win to his credit and is 25th in the world rankings. Hovland is fearless and can play aggressively when he needs to, so don’t be surprised to see him make birdies in bunches.

A runner-up in 2018, Rickie Fowler is always a threat when the scores go low. He has solid tee-to-green play and can putt as well as anyone on Tour.

Fowler has struggled for the last year, with his last win coming at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. He’s due to break out of his slump and is at +2500 in Mexico.

One of the Mexican players that hopes to become the first from his country to win the Mayakoba is Carlos Ortiz. Abraham Ancer is one of the favorites, but unlike Ancer, Ortiz has a win in 2020-21 at the Vivint Houston Open. Ortiz is at +3000 for this week.

A former winner who is playing well is 2018 champion Patton Kizzire, trying to rebound from a disappointing 2020 season. He’s made five cuts in a row and is coming off a top 10 finish at the RSM Classic. With odds of +6600, he could provide quite the payday if he were to hoist the trophy on Sunday afternoon.

If you’re looking for more of a longshot, Brian Gay might just be the player. He is seeing a resurgence in his career and won in Bermuda in his last start. His closing 64 showed he can make birdies when he has to, and he is at +10000 for the Mayakoba.
