Russell Henley - Travelers Championship
Russell Henley - Travelers Championship

After a thrilling U.S. Open win by Jon Rahm at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, the PGA Tour heads to the opposite coast for the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands, located in Connecticut between New Haven and Hartford. In addition to world number one and defending champion Dustin Johnson, four others in the top ten in the world rankings are in the surprisingly strong field, a week after a major championship that was contested all the way across the country.

A number of players that had a chance in the U.S. Open on Sunday are playing this week, including Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler, Paul Casey, Matthew Wolff, and Harris English. They’ll be competing over the 6,841-yard layout that plays to a par 70 and has yielded some low scores in the past, including Jim Furyk’s 58 that stands as the lowest score in PGA Tour history.

At +5000, Russell Henley might have found something in his game last week that he can build on as he heads east.

Betting Odds for TPC River Highlands

The favorites at +1200 are Johnson and DeChambeau, both of whom had some chances at Torrey Pines, especially DeChambeau who held the lead briefly on Sunday before his eight over par 44 on the back nine relegated him to a tie for 26th. Brooks Koepka is at +1400, Paul Casey is at +1600 along with Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler, still looking for his first PGA Tour victory, is at +2200.

Three-time former champion Bubba Watson is at +4500 while fellow lefthander and back-to-back winner in 2000 and 2001 Phil Mickelson is at +6600. New Englander Keegan Bradley has odds of +5500, Rickie Fowler is at +5000 and is joined there by former U.S. Open champion Justin Rose.

Underdog Betting Picks for the Travelers

Stewart Cink, a two-time former champion who has already won twice in the 2020-2021 season, is a betting longshot at +8000 but could provide a massive payday if could find a way to add a third Travelers Championship to his resume. With his son on the bag, Cink appears to be playing with a relaxed demeanor and should be in contention and if he gets there, will be a definite threat to close the deal.

After taking some time off, Matthew Wolff played some solid golf in the U.S. Open before fading on Sunday, but at +4000 odds he offers a real value wager for the Travelers. He might even get some course tips from Bubba Watson, who has given Wolff some advice on how to handle the pressure of the PGA Tour, which might help him be able to harness his strong abilities.

Russell Henley, who was tied for the lead in the U.S. Open heading into the final round, shot a 76 on Sunday to fall into a tie for 13th, but he had a lot of company in succumbing to the tough conditions and stifling major championship pressure. He has odds of +5000 and might have found something in his game last week that he can build on as he heads east.
