The 121st U.S. Open will be played on the Torrey Pines South Course, which will spur memories of Tiger Woods’ thrilling playoff victory over Rocco Mediate in 2008, the last time the event was held at the venue. Torrey Pines also hosts the annual Farmers Insurance Open, which was won by Patrick Reed in January.

Playing to a par 71 at 7,652 yards, the South Course is the more difficult of the two layouts at Torrey Pines. When Woods won in 2008, he and Mediate were the only players to break par over four rounds, tying at one under par 283 before competing in an 18 hole playoff.

In last year’s U.S. Open, Bryson DeChambeau overwhelmed the field at Winged Foot in the final round, shooting the lowest score of the day, a three-under-par 67, to win by six shots. The tournament was postponed from June to September due to Covid-19 and became the first official event of the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season.

This year, it moves back to its traditional Father’s Day weekend date, with Phil Mickelson looking to turn back the clock once again in his attempt to complete the career grand slam. What seemed highly unlikely five weeks ago became less improbable when the 50-year-old Mickelson shocked the golf world by winning the PGA Championship.

Joh Rahm, a five-time winner on Tour but without a major, is the favorite at odds of +800.

Betting Odds at Torrey Pines

The top ten players in the betting odds have cumulatively won 16 major championships, with only three of them still looking for their first one. Joh Rahm, a five-time winner on Tour but without a major, is the favorite at odds of +800, two weeks after having to withdraw from the Memorial due to Covid-19 after leading by six shots following the third round.

A trio of major winners, led by defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, is next at +1200. He is joined at those odds by world number two Justin Thomas and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, recent winners of the Players Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship, respectively.

There are three former U.S. Open champions among the four players that are at +1400 in the futures odds. Two-time winner Brooks Koepka, 2016 winner Dustin Johnson and 2015 champion Jordan Spieth are joined by Xander Schauffele, who is one of those trying to win his first major championship.

Rounding out the top ten at +2200 are 2020 PGA champion Collin Morikawa and two-time PGA Tour winner Viktor Hovland. Farmers Insurance winner and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed is at +2500, and he is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Memorial.

Phil Mickelson has odds of +5000 to follow up his PGA Championship victory with his first U.S. Open win. Popular Will Zalatoris is at +3300 along with Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, and Tommy Fleetwood.

2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland, who has been battling injuries, is at +6600 with Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, and Sergio Garcia in a large group at +8000. Resurgent Stewart Cink, the 2009 British Open champion who has a pair of wins this season, appears to be a solid bet at +10000.
